I remember the day my friend Lettie Brownstein came over with her new "Encyclopedia of Unusual Phenomenon" books. One of the photos and it's explanation really blew my mind...
This lovely bird is trapped inside of an ancient Chinese fan. When the fan is opened, the bird is motivated to do what is called..."Jewel vomiting".
Jewel Vomiting was first witnessed in 1871 on a cargo ship carrying expensive Oriental art pieces, sailing from China. Legend has it that one of the ship hands said he had 'heard something' inside of one of the crates. When he opened up the crate, he saw what looked like a folded fan and it was 'moving'!
He carefully opened the fan and when he saw the bird 'vomiting up jewels' he tried to take them from the bird.
He was never seen again.
This exquisite fan can be seen at The Metropolitan Museum of Art, in the 'recent acquisitions' section.
He carefully opened the fan and when he saw the bird 'vomiting up jewels' he tried to take them from the bird.
